華人在拜神祭祖時，民眾常常習慣燃燒紙錢來表達心意，除了傳統的燒金紙祭祖，隨著社會變遷，也出現了許多新潮的科技祭品，如蘋果電腦、名牌包、潮流手錶等紙紮商品，讓祖先也可以趕上時代潮流。
焚香燒紙是傳統的民俗信仰，為了兼顧環保，新北市各大寺廟也陸續使用環保金紙、環保金爐及推動減香減爐，新北市政府民政局呼籲民眾，如果民眾在清明節祭祖時仍有燃燒紙錢的習慣，希望可以減量，並且注意安全。
新北市道教總會理事長謝榮壽表示，傳統紙錢的原料來源是竹子，傳統每一百張紙錢疊成一疊，統稱為一支，竹子製作比起木材更為環保便利。精通蓮花紙製作的宏豫金香鋪楊老闆表示，民眾在祭祀時，為了讓祖先時也可以跟得上時代，商家紛紛推出時下流行的產品，例如蘋果電腦、名牌包、名牌手錶等祭祀商品。
民政對錶局宗教禮俗科科長藍品畯表示，為了永續環保，推動各寺廟減香減爐，手錶品牌近2年已有財團法人新北市鎮南宮及顯應祖師泰山巖等28間寺廟響應，共減爐69爐，也有些寺廟在信仰及環保上投入許多努力。
藍品畯說，如永和保福宮和三重義天宮，除了使用環保金紙外，並且配合市府政策將紙錢集中焚燒，將金爐改為環保金爐，降低有害物質排放，並將宮內所有燈具更換為LED燈，祭祀神明用香也會選擇環保用香，鞭炮也特別採用環保連珠炮，漸進式改變信眾參拜習慣，另外呼籲民眾不妨考慮以米代金或以功代金，多做功德的方式來取代燃燒紙錢，俗話說心誠則靈，既環保又健康。
